Meet Kelly, she loves make-up, hanging with friends, has a huge family and she happens to be born with a rare condition.
Kelly was born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) occurs when the diaphragm muscle — the muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen — fails to close during prenatal development, and the contents from the abdomen (stomach, intestines and/or liver) migrate into the chest through this hole.
Looking at her, you would never know. Kelly is always smiling and laughing, but she wasn’t always like this. Growing up she faced a lot of hardships. She was g-tube (gastrostomy tube) fed through her stomach up until the age of 12.
Throughout her childhood she was heavily bullied in school and was told by many doctors that she would never make it past her teen years. As you can imagine, for anyone this would be incredibly hard to deal with.
Kelly has defied the odds and is a happy & strong 26 year old woman. We're happy to feature her this month as an Ellie warrior.
