Anna is wearing our January look, Island Splash.
There’s nothing like that post-workout glow — the one you get when you’ve just completed your favorite routine, had your heart pumping, and you’re feeling good. The natural effect on your mood, skin, and body is undeniable. What if we told you there’s more you can do to enhance that? We’ve teamed up with Anna Rittenhouse, and she’s not only giving us the inside scoop on her favorite ways to get her exercise in, we get an inside peek at how she takes care of her skin — after getting her fitness on — that takes her glow to the next level!
Hey all! Anna here. I am so excited to be partnering with Ellie to share some of my favorite skincare tips for that after-workout glow! Wearing my new Wildfox Sweat activewear, a collab created exclusively for Ellie, I am going to share some of my favorite things about a typical workout, and how I tend to my self-care directly after! I find that my post-workout skincare routine goes beyond looks — it also contributes to my self-esteem and self-worth, as I know I am taking the time to take care of myself, at the end of the day.
Before we dive in, I thought I would share a little bit about myself, so that you can get to know me, if even in a small way. I am a 28-year-old blogger and social media manager living in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. I have a precious puppy named Macatawa, and he is such a joy. I named Macatawa after my favorite lake in Michigan, Lake Macatawa, but I call him Mac, for short! I have two older sisters, Ashley and Allison, who have acted as incredible role models for me my entire life. My mom is our rock and she has supported my sisters and me through the best and worst. We all have a tight bond and it became even tighter when our dad passed away, a few years ago. We miss him dearly, but he is a great source of our motivation, as he always pushed us to be our best selves. He was an incredible doctor and my mom, sisters, and I live to make him proud, as we know he’s watching down on us!
A few fun facts about me:
- I went to Michigan State University.
- I’m a Chi Omega alumni.
- I moved to Holland, Michigan after college.
- I moved to Austin, Texas for a short while (loved it there, but it wasn’t the Midwest).
- I finally landed in Grand Rapids, Michigan and it’s where I see myself for many years to come.
And before we get to the serious stuff, let’s do a quick-fire favorites round:
Fruits or Veggies
Ice Cream or Crepes
Coffee Black or With Milk
Cupcakes or Macaroons
Planks or Press-Ups
Skiing or Snowboarding
Sex and the City or Friends
Leggings or Sweats (BOTH?! But if I had to choose, sweats!)
Now, let’s talk business! I’ve found a workout that I’ve been in love with for quite a few years. I’ve always worked out, but I’ve not always loved it. With the discovery of Pure Barre, I developed a love for barre classes of all types. I’m very fortunate that the gym I have access to has The Mirror, in which I can do the barre classes with the direction of a fitness instructor, while still seeing my moves as I work to master the barre techniques. It is honestly the coolest workout machine I’ve ever had the opportunity to use and I am a HUGE fan. With that said, I know equipment like this is expensive and not everyone has access to it. Never hesitate to get creative. Use your computer or phone and simply YouTube classes that suit you! You can also often find free trials on apps, such as the Peloton app. I find that classes are what motivate me the most, so prior to having use of The Mirror, that is what I was doing.
I love my Ellie x Wildfox Sweat workout set because I typically like to start in long sleeves, and then get hot enough that I need to take it off. The matching sports bra and leggings are not only cute, but they are incredibly well made for workouts of all intensities. I love not having to pull at my leggings to keep them up during a workout, and these passed that test for me! Their high-waisted nature is a big bonus!
Now that we’ve covered my favorite type of workout, let’s move onto skincare tips and tricks I use to get that post-workout glow. I’ve been using Derma-E for quite a few years now and I’ve yet to stray away. I find that they’re always coming out with innovative new products that are 100% vegan, GMO-free, cruelty-free, and free of parabens, sulfates, petrolatum, mineral oils, phthalates, and sodium lauryl sulfates. While I’ve been using Derma-E for years, I have added one special step to my skincare routine that I think has really helped me as I detox after a workout. Again, I realize I am very fortunate with this amenity, however, keep in mind, there are alternative options. After my workouts, I have been sitting in the sauna for 15-20 minutes to get a good sweat going. If a sauna isn’t within your reach, no worries, you can use a face steamer, and that will essentially give the same effect! From there, I wash my face and begin my skincare routine:
